Breaking Social Constructs.

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to the blog.

Today, is the start of a brand new week, meaning five brand new articles coming your way. Which, in turn, means many hours in front of my laptop for me, not that I’m complaining. And, this is what I’ll be discussing today.

What the Majority Think about Working.

For most of us, work is exclusive to the hours between 9 am and 5 pm. And, while this is accurate to a degree if you want to escape the 9–5 life, I’m here to tell you; you don’t stop working when you clock out.

You see, the problem for many of us is we were raised by a generation of hard workers, a generation that follows a strict schedule: You wake up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, relax, go to bed, and repeat. This pattern carries on until either one of two things happens:

  1. You make enough money so you can retire.
  2. You decide enough is enough and do something about it.

I’m here to put you on the path of the second outcome.

Understanding the Construct.

This repeated series of activities is nothing more than a construct that society has created for us. No-one instructed you the day you were born that you will work, eat, and sleep until you can’t any more. Instead, they waited until you were old enough to notice everyone else abiding by the construct so you could just fit into the casted dye.

Naturally, it was only a matter of time before you decided enough was enough and wanted to break the work-life loop, allowing you to live life on your terms. For many, this is the end goal. However, first, we need to understand the importance of sticking with the social construct for a bit longer.

When it comes to breaking the social construct, it doesn’t take long for many to realise they need to work on their own; they need to be their boss to empower themselves.

But, following this decision many also realise how much work and time it takes before you’re in a position where you’re financially comfortable enough not to have serious implications.

Learn from my mistakes and don’t do what I did, I quit my job and jumped straight into building my own business. It didn’t work out, and within three months I was back at work. Instead stay in your 9–5 until your side-project is profitable enough to live off.

However, if you want to keep yourself stable enough so you can build your dream, you will have to make one big, and that’s your free time.

Use Your Time, to Make Time.

If you’re following me on Instagram (which you totally should be). Then you would have seen the post linked below on Saturday, if not make sure to take a look.

I wanted to include that photo in this post, not because it’s a fantastic photo but because of what it’s subject and the content within it.

On any given Saturday night at 10 pm, what is the last thing every one of us wants to be doing? Working.

But, that’s precisely what we need to do, if we want to break the social construct we’re living in.

Like most of us, I have a day job that includes working weekends, but I don’t plan on staying there forever, and I know, I want to be my boss. But, it’s my decision if I want to make that a reality.

Yes, it means lots of late nights as that night proved. (I was editing the newsletter for last Sunday up until 23:30 Saturday night. Check it out.)

Yes, it means a reduced social life, while my friends and family are out, enjoying life. I’m inside trying to build a better life for my future self.

And, yes it means less time to myself, which is torturous as I love gaming.

But, in the end, will it all be worth it? Will the late nights, early mornings, hard work, and endless amounts of stress be worth it?

I think so when the morning comes that I’m not pushed to get out of bed because someone else has told me to and I’m not making money on someone else’s terms, I’ll look back at those nights and mornings and be glad I did what I did.

The real question is, are you willing to do the same? Tell me over on Twitter.

I hope you enjoyed this article.

Thank you for reading.

See you again tomorrow.
